Why is suffering the common lot of all people everywhere - believers and non-believers alike - and why does it seem that the world is out of control when it comes to the problem of pain and suffering?

These are not easy questions, and in reality, you will never know the answers completely until you see our Lord face to face in heaven. Nevertheless, the Bible does give you some answers.

Who’s in Charge of a World that Suffers? includes an informative and inspirational new introduction by Franklin Graham that speaks to today’s reader in the midst of painful circumstances.

In this book, originally titled Till Armageddon, world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham uncovers the clues the scriptures offer you to this universal question--the question of suffering. Readers will discover what the Bible says about:

  • Why Christians are not exempt from suffering
  • Living above your circumstances
  • The place of prayer in suffering
  • God’s promises for those who suffer
  • And much more

Christians are called to learn what it means to trust God in every circumstance, and to live for Him no matter what comes our way. It is essential to think more clearly about suffering, and to rearrange your priorities so that when your personal armageddons come, you will not be taken by surprise or be unprepared. Christian readers, pastors, Bible study leaders, and anyone questioning where God fits into suffering will find encouragement in this message of hope for a broken world.
Principles of Corporate Finance (Paperback, 14th edition): Richard Brealey, Stewart Myers, Franklin Allen, Alex Edmans Principles of Corporate Finance (Paperback, 14th edition)
Richard Brealey, Stewart Myers, Franklin Allen, Alex Edmans
R1,868 Discovery Miles 18 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The latest edition in the Principles of Corporate Finance dynasty, the 14th edition continues in its tradition of showing how theory applies to the very practical problems and decisions faced by financial managers. Looking at what financial managers do and why, the book aims to give readers a solid understanding of theory so that they know what questions to ask when times change and new problems need to be analyzed, eventually standing as a reference and a guide to help them make financial decisions, not just study them. This new edition welcomes Alex Edmans to the author team, whose global authority and expertise in corporate governance, responsible business and behavioural finance have been invaluable in bolstering coverage of these topics. A new chapter is entirely dedicated to the subject of balancing shareholder value with promoting the interests of all stakeholders, the potential conflicts inherent in this, and how a responsible business should behave. There have been several changes to chapter structure as well as expanded discussion of issues that have grown in importance since the previous edition including behavioural finance, and financial innovation driven by AI, big data and cloud computing. It has also grown to take a more international focus, to bring in more information and perspectives on major developing economies such as China and India, and looking at how financing and governance systems differ around the world. The new edition retains and builds on the pedagogical features of previous editions, with new chapter content summaries, new self-test questions interspersed at key points, and a raft of 'Beyond the page' examples available online through links in the text. Handbook on Alternative Global Development: Franklin Obeng-Odoom Handbook on Alternative Global Development
Franklin Obeng-Odoom
R5,948 Discovery Miles 59 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Challenging the dominant and mainstream views in global development, this pioneering Handbook questions the entirety of the development process in order to outline the holistic political economies of development, its discontents, and its alternatives. Critically engaging with key theoretical debates and constructs in development studies, expert contributors assess the problem of global development and underdevelopment and the existing problematic explanations and solutions, before outlining alternatives. Chapters explore the nature of development, engaging with, critiquing and going beyond the dominant theoretical approaches of modernisation, dependency, neoliberalism, human development, sustainable development, and post development. They further examine more recent powerful forces of change, including sustainability, self-reliance, social and solidarity economies, and ecological alternatives. The Handbook makes a convincing case for an open-ended, ongoing theorisation of development and leaves readers with a key take-away: that not only inequalities but also social stratification can be used to frame the theorising, teaching, practice, praxis, policies, politics, activism, and indeed everything in the political economy of development. Underpinning innovative new research on development, this Handbook will prove invaluable to students and scholars of development studies, development economics, political economy and social policy in emerging countries. Global in scope, policymakers and practitioners working in the Global South will also find its insights refreshing.

Thomas Hardy and Religion - Theological Themes in Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure (Paperback): Richard... Thomas Hardy and Religion - Theological Themes in Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure (Paperback)
Richard Franklin
R982 Discovery Miles 9 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The wellspring of Thomas Hardy and Religion is the recognition that Thomas Hardys two late great novels, Tess of the dUrbervilles and Jude the Obscure, are dominated, respectively, by two religious traditions of nineteenth-century Anglicanism: Evangelicalism and Anglo-Catholicism. Placing those movements in their historical context alongside other Victorian religious traditions, the author explores the development of Hardys religious beliefs and ideas up till the 1880s. Evangelicalism in Tess is discussed through an analysis of the principal characters, Angel Clare and his father, Parson Clare, Alec dUrberville and Tess herself, leading to a consideration of why this form of Christianity looms so large in that novel. Not unexpectedly, the reasons for this are linked to Hardys personal and intellectual biography, especially his religious upbringing and experience of and involvement in these religious traditions. This applies to both novels. The sources of Jude the Obscure in Hardys life and thought, and their links to Anglo-Catholicism, are revealed in the context of the influence of that tradition on the narrative and characters, in particular Judes sense of vocation, the importance of the university town of Christminster and issues associated with marriage, divorce and sexuality. Throughout his analysis of both novels the author demonstrates how Hardy lambasts the way in which these religious traditions and the conventional Victorian morality they bolstered undermine human flourishing. Thomas Hardy and Religion concludes by considering the place these two novels have in the continuing trajectory of Hardys theological ideas, underlining the critical importance of understanding his religious concerns and reflecting on the way in which his critique of religion is important to people of faith.

A deeply evocative novel of the life of Isabella Stewart Gardner, a daring visionary who created an inimitable legacy in American art and transformed the city of Boston itself. By the time Isabella Stewart Gardner opened her Italian palazzo-style home as a museum in 1903 to showcase her collection of old masters, antiques, and objects d'art, she was already well-known for scandalizing Boston's polite society. But when Isabella first arrived in Boston in 1861, she was twenty years old, newly married to a wealthy trader, and unsure of herself. Puzzled by the frosty reception she received from stuffy bluebloods, she strived to fit in. After two devastating tragedies and rejection from upper-society, Isabella discovered her spirit and cast off expectations. Freed by travel, Isabella explores the world of art, ideas, and letters, meeting such kindred spirits as Henry James and Oscar Wilde. From London and Paris to Egypt and Asia, she develops a keen eye for paintings and objects, and meets feminists ready to transform nineteenth century thinking in the twentieth century. Isabella becomes an eccentric trailblazer, painted by John Singer Sargent in a portrait of daring decolletage, and fond of such stunts as walking a pair of lions in the Boston Public Garden. The Lioness of Boston is a portrait of what society expected a woman's life to be, shattered by a courageous soul who rebelled and determined to live on her own terms.
